Schools out for Summer!

Lorie's picture

It's here....summer holidays for the kids! Just wanted to say "Thanks" to all of those amazing teachers who have our kids ten months of the year! We are in awe of you and appreciate you immensely! The way you keep our kids engaged and focused during the school months ...only to see their brains go to mush during the summer! Again , a heartfelt thanks to you!To parents : How do you  deal with the "I'm Bored's"? Are there any special things you do to fill the void or do you just let kids be kids and have no structure or set plans for the next two month? We will be spending much time at our cottage at the Lake...how about you???Happy summer everyone!

Too young to have a cellphone?

Lorie's picture

As a mom of a ten year old boy, I have had repeated discussions as of late about the necessity of a cell-phone for him.We live close to his school, our neighbourhood participates in the block-parent program and there is a phone at his school and at the friend's house that he visits after school. I think is should be obvious from these reasons that, I don't feel a cell-phone is an immediate priority for our current family situation at this time. However when and if situations change , as he becomes older and gets more responsible, I do see the merits of a cell-phone , just not at this time.I am going to stand firm on my decisions and not give into the "but everyone has one , Mom " arguement.

Enough with the playoff hockey already!!!

Lorie's picture

Alrighty ...I for one am sick to death of playoff hockey!!! As the only member of an all male household during hockey season ...I am sadly outnumbered!!! Last night ...I decided to offer renting a movie as an option to watching hockey. I was met with icy cold stares of disbelief and shock! My husband simply told me with no uncertainty " I'm watching Hockey!!!! You would have thought that i had hurled an insult at him or uttered a dirty word!My oldest son then informed me that "Mom .....the Flames are playing...this is a very important game!" Even my youngest boy looked at me in disgust and waved a mini-stick in my face!!! I guess it is back to hockey for a good long while then ....anyone for a night of "The Notebook"????

Your purse can make you sick!

Lorie's picture

Hand bags and dirt ....a true story! Ladies , as a true germ-a-phobe ,

I was shocked to learn that I was overlooking a major source of dirt and bacteria! What is found on the bottom of your purse! Think about it ...how many times have you gone to use a public potty and placed your handbag on the floor or thrown you purse into a shopping cart and then gone home and placed it on the kitchen counter or the dining room table! You will be shocked to know that in a test of handbags, 4 out of 5 of harboured so much dirt and bacteria that a microbiologist is urging us to take a closer look at a source that can be very high in bacterias that can be extremely harmful! Bacterias that include: Staph infection, eye infection, skin disorders or even salmonella and ecoli!!!

In the case of a woman who frequented nightclubs, traces of feces and even vomit was found!!!Yuck!!!

Experts say you can protect yourself by treating your handbag as you would a pair of shoes....would you really wear your shoes  out and then put them on a table where you eat...I didn't think so!

Next time you are out be mindful of all the places your purse has been ...and i'll bet you'll think twice about placing it on the the kitchen counter ever again!!!!

Movie Star Smile

Lorie's picture

I have noticed lately,  more often than not, that people are sporting movie star smiles! Is it just me or is this the new trend? Its not just a clean ,bright smile people are  going for these days but rather a dazzling ,super-white Guy Smilie kind of look. Do you think it is more attractive to have a natural  smile{sans spinach  of course}or a super-human, blinding white smile that gets you noticed? Has teeth-whitening gone too far...or is it now something to strive for?

mammogram a piece of cake!

Lorie's picture

Well, surprise, surprise......I survived my first mammogram! By the way, I am pleased to report that it was a piece of cake! Contrary to what people told me ...it did not hurt! The best way to describe the experience is to say it is uncomfortable at best! I found the staff to be upbeat, positive, friendly and excellent at putting my mind at ease.If you have ever thought about getting a mammogram or have one scheduled...give yourself a big pat on the back.! You are doing yourself a huge disservice by not taking advantage of an excellent heathcare service that is absolutely free and could potentially save your life! Now that is invaluable!

Nervous about the mammogram!

Lorie's picture

Well....It's that time in my life ...I am going for my first mammogram! It is just a pre-cautionary exam because I have hit the magical milestone in my life.....the big 4-0! I have to admit though, to being a little on the nervous side! Two of my girlfreinds were diagnosed with breast-cancer during routine checks at this age...but you know what? Neither of them would be here today if it were not for early detection. My doctor told me to do the self - exam at home on a monthly basis and she gave me a note of advice that I would like to share with you.She said " If you are looking for a lump ...you are going to find a lump!"  Her  advice to me was to look for things that were not there the month before ...lumps and bumps may pop up from time to time as the hormones change in your body....but look specifically for changes in them ....growth of a lump, unusual discharge or pain..sensitivity....or something that is different ...but you can't quite put your finger on it! So far ...everything appears to be in order for me .I have to admit though...I am nervous and even a little scared!!!!I can't wait to get it over with and receive a clean bill of health ....so I can sleep soundly at night once more!

Brit-Watch continues!

Lorie's picture

By now you are up to speed on the very public meltdown of Britney Speers. Maybe Britney isn't solely to blame! Sam Lufti is her personal manager. Since October he has moved into Britney's home ,taken over control of her finances, given her parenting advice and basically taken over her life...{according to Britney's mother Lynne}. Decide for yourself! Read on.....

So what does Sam Lufti think of being barred from contacting Britney? Per a new restraining order, Lufti must stay 250 yards away from Britney and the UCLAMedicalCenter, as well as the homes of her parents, her siblings, her children and Britney's homes. But Sam totally disregarded the idea that Britney's parent's control over her would last, telling Us Weekly: "They're never going to be able to rule her forever."

Oh, but HE [Sam] can? Someday, Britney just MIGHT be calling her own shots.

Take a look at just some of the things the L.A. Superior Court's 11-page restraining order against Sam says about him ...

• "Britney met Mr. Lufti in or about October 2007. He essentially moved into Britney's home and has purported to take control of her life, home and finances."

"Mr. Lufti drugged Britney."

"He has cut Britney's home phone line and removed her cell phone chargers."

"He yells at her."

"He claims to control everything -- Britney's business manger, her attorneys and the security guards at the gate."

"Immediate relief is necessary to avoid the risk of physical harm to Britney by Mr. Lutfi and to allow her to undergo necessary medical treatment without interference by Mr. Lutfi."

According to the document, the restraining order against Sam was filed February 1st by James P. Spears. The hearing date for the restraining order is set for February 22.

Kicking the Coffee Habit

Lorie's picture

I recently found something out about myself...I'm addicted to COFFEE...Something that began so innocently has turned to an ADDICTION.

I started drinking coffee during my second maternity leave, as I realized with the sleepless nights I needed a pick me up. From there it turned to a social habit,, in which I would meet my husband or friends for a quick cup of Joe. Soon I found myself, one of those poor lost and lonely souls waiting in the Tim Hortons line up for that one golden cup of the coveted Double/Double!!

I recently decided to curb my coffee drinking and cut back on my coffee condiments as a New Years resloution. Now I find myself craving caffine and missing the hot steaming confection, not only that but I have become cranky, edgy and headachey, not to mention I have a nasty case of the shakes when I miss my coffee break. I can't start my day with out it.

It started out harmless but now I know I wiill be seen on an episode of Intervention...Is it all in my head or am I really suffering from an addiction...Let's discuss
